The sound art installation 'Plastisphere' is a architectonical intervention in a church refering to new life on plastic pollution particle which float at the surface of the ocean.

This art project is the outcome of a collaboration with scientists Erik en Linda Amaral – Zettler of the Dutch NIOZ Ocean Research Centre on the island of Texel. The project refers to the research of the plastic soup where organisms like Diatoms and bacteria living on floating ocean plastic particles and form a new habitat.

This architectonical intervention in the church of Texel acts like a structure generating sound by its plastic which is slowly breathing in and out continuously during the three month exhibition and takes 22 minutes to fill it with air and takes 22 minutes to vacuum it. By doing so the typical recycled plastic shopping bags give a crackling sound which has a resemblance with the sound of rain and gives a meditative feeling in order to reflect on this pollution matter in the church location..
In order to experience this complete and slowly process you are forced to be patient and give yourself an other mindset..

The stop motion video's give a clear picture of the growth and decay of the plastic cell structure which is made by shopping bags. It refers to living organisms in the ocean who seem to adapt and create new ways to survive in this polluted environment. While this structure catches the daylight like organisms do on the surface of the ocean in order to live, it also refers to Diatom organisms and the way they connect to the material. Here a dialogue between nature and culture is taking place. Besides that the structure has two completely different identities like in nature, both with beautiful visual qualities however the decay side of it resembles the near future if we don't do something about our plastic use.
